New residents prepare to help turn a dream into reality for the Community Homes Canal Street Affordable Housing Project.

Six years ago, the Board of Directors of Community Homes of Lebanon County boldly decided to devote considerable time, effort, and a significant financial commitment to building a new 23-unit handicap-friendly housing community in North Lebanon Township.
The organization owns and operates buildings in Lebanon County representing 289 housing units. Still, the waiting list of over five years dictates the need for even more housing for the disadvantaged and the elderly in Lebanon County. Thus, the decision was made to build these new housing units.
Following phase one of a three-phase capital campaign that allowed construction, the first six units are almost “move-in” ready and have been committed to the first group of residents. The move-in date will be identified soon.
Community Homes recently hosted an informal get-together for three soon-to-be residents in the Community Room at the Oak Terrace apartment building so they could get to know each other before becoming neighbors.
Lisa Komewal will no longer endure climbing steps into her old apartment, Yvonne Torres can go home to a brand-new place after working at Calvary Chapel, and Lisa Sternberg and her Yorke dog Stinker will have a new down-sized manageable place to live without the upkeep of a large older home. You can see the happiness on their face in the photo.
“Seeing these happy people so grateful for this opportunity to live in one of these new units is what it is all about,” says Community Homes CEO Charlie Rush. “We still have more building and fundraising ahead of us. We continue to be blessed living among the people in our compassionate and caring Lebanon County Community”. A project like this would not be possible without their support.
